Lycos exists!

30 minutes back, I saw a Lycos press release! My heart skipped a beat. I used to use it, umm.. may be in 1998…. I must have had 2 email id’s and had joined few Lycos communities. Those day, Lycos, Excite were a rage!

I never forgot the lycos spelling, so naturally, i typed it out lycos.com and what I see? May be a game site? Never mind, it ranks 1,668 in Alexa bar. Haha…. a Dog as a logo, what on earth?

Some history of Internet Search you should know

Memex: The idea of a virtually limitless, fast, reliable, extensible, associative memory storage and retrieval system. It was proposed by Vannaver Bush, one of Roosevelt’s scientific advisers in the mid-1940s.

Xanadu: Project Xanadu, created by Ted Nelson in 1960, was to create a computer network with a simple user interface that solved many social problems like attribution. A lot of the inspiration to create the WWW came from Project Xanadu.

SMART: The father of modern search technology, George Salton, created eveloped the Saltons Magic Automatic Retriever of Text, also known as the SMART informational retrieval system. The system had important concepts like the Term Frequency (TF), Inverse Document Frequency (IDF), term discrimination values, relevancy feedback mechanisms and vector space model. A book by him called “A theory of indexing” is still popular with search engine developers and search guidelines developed today follow his ideas.

To Flash or Not To Flash

Flash is a popular or unpopular way to display your presence online. As far as my experience goes, every company wants “some sort” of flash on their website and the users don’t want to wait for the flash to load. Its a classiqe lock. As a rule, when we talk about companies and users, we talk about majority, exceptions are many and I am talking my experience. Flash is disabled in my PC too. Even are the images too, but are allowed when its critical. Flash is not allowed, absolutely!

I am not against flash, but I am against misuse of flash.
